Royal Courts of Justice

The Royal Courts of Justice ( RCJ ), commonly known as Law Courts , is a building in London that houses the Court of Appeal and the High Court of Justice of England and Wales .

The square building made of gray stone was built between 1874 and 1882 in the late phase of the Gothic Revival . The architect was George Edmund Street . The Royal Courts are located on the Strand , on the border between the City of London and the City of Westminster . The courtrooms are open to the public, although restrictions may be imposed on certain court cases. The center of the complex is an enormous rib-vaulted hall 80 m long with a mosaic floor based on a design by Street. The four Inns of Court are also located near the building .

The Court of Appeal and the High Court together were the Supreme Court of England and Wales until 2009, but their function differed considerably from the Supreme Court of the USA . While they handled far more court cases, they had much less influence at the constitutional level.

The closest London Underground stations are Temple and Chancery Lane .
