Royal Scottish National Hospital

The Royal Scottish National Hospital was a hospital in the Scottish town of Larbert in the Council Area of Falkirk . In 1990 the building was included in the Scottish monument lists, initially in category B. The upgrade to the highest category A took place in 2001. The monument protection ended with the demolition of the building in 2014.

history

Due to its central location in the main population center of Scotland, Larbert was selected as the location for the psychiatric state hospital. The main building was built between 1862 and 1864 according to a design by the architect Frederick Thomas Pilkington . The total cost was around £ 11,000. The license to operate the facility was granted in 1864. Further outbuildings were added between 1864 and 1870. The building has been empty since 1989 at the latest.

In February 1991 an entry was made on the register of endangered listed buildings in Scotland. During a site inspection, erosion and a leaky roof were found. In the same year an application was submitted to demolish the buildings in order to develop the site as an industrial area. The permit was granted, but did not extend to the two separately listed buildings. The Falkirk Regional Council requested the demolition several times in the following decade, but failed in all cases. Since 1996 a buyer has been looking for the restoration and continued use of the former hospital. The demolition of the preserved outer building is approved subject to the restoration of the main building in 2000. However, due to the lack of potential buyers, this option is not used. Parts of the building collapsed in January 2005, causing accelerated deterioration. Since 2008, parts of the west facade have been secured by supporting structures. Other parts of the building collapsed in winter 2010. Most recently, in 2012, the condition was classified as very poor and the hazard as critical.

In 2014, the structure of the vacant building was classified as so poor that despite its high architectural value, demolition was seen as no alternative. In March 2014, the former hospital was demolished.
