The Royal Tasmanian Botanical Gardens are the botanical gardens of Hobart , the capital of Tasmania in Australia . World icon

They were founded in 1818, are located in the Queens Domain on the lower reaches of the Derwent River and cover an area of 14 hectares. In the garden you will find historical collections of plants and a large number of outstanding trees, many of them from the 19th century. It also houses a growing number of important conservation collections of Tasmanian plants, of which Lomatia tasmanica is one of the most peculiar. There is also the only sub-Antarctic greenhouse in the world. Plants from the sub-Antarctic islands (south of Australia and New Zealand) are exhibited here in an air-conditioned environment, where cold fog and haze create the damp, cold living conditions of their island home. The plants of the sub-Antarctic greenhouse were collected by employees of the botanical garden and devoted scientists on excursions to Macquarie Island .

The visitor center houses a restaurant, a souvenir shop, a gallery with regularly changing exhibitions by local artists and an exhibition area for the collections of the botanical garden.

history

Before the settlement by the Europeans, Tasmanian Aboriginal tribes used this area and traces of their life can still be found there today.

Cooperation with the city

The Royal Tasmanian Botanical Gardens often support the city of Hobart. So they housed z. B. in February 2011 a photo exhibition designed by students from OAK Community Services .

In early 2011, the botanical garden hosted Power Plant , a sound and light show that came straight from a sell-off season in Hong Kong . This show was set up in the gardens as part of 10 days on the Island Festival 2011.

education

The Royal Tasmanian Botanical Gardens are designed to educate the population on the subjects of plants and the environment. One of the larger educational events of the year is Growing Your Future , a career information event that brings together many organizations and companies on the one hand and students on the other in order to broaden their career prospects and horizons. In 2012 the event is scheduled to take place on April 27th.

The botanical garden also participates in the partnership Growing our Future, Growing the NBN (cooperation with the national broadband (Internet) network for the education of the Tasmanian population in garden culture). Continue to take GlobalNET ICT and the Independent Schools Tasmania part.
