Hist. Names Rua do Tesouro Velho

The Rua António Maria Cardoso is a street in the center of the Portuguese capital Lisbon . It leads in the Chiado district from Rua Vítor Cordon in a northerly direction uphill to Largo do Chiado .

Originally the street was named Rua do Tesouro Velho after the treasury of the Dukes of Braganza located here . By resolution of the city council, the street was given its current name on February 6, 1890 on the occasion of the return of the African explorer António Maria Cardoso (1849–1900) to Lisbon.

In 1894, the São Luiz Theater was built in the street . The former Paço dos Duques de Bragança was the seat of the secret police PIDE from 1955 , which from 1969 was called Direção-Geral de Segurança (DGS). During the Carnation Revolution of April 25, 1974, insurgents tried to storm the building. Four people were shot dead. The following morning the police surrendered. The insurgents put a second sign next to the plaque with the street name: “Avenida dos Mortos pela PIDE” (Street of the Victims of the PIDE). Since 2005 a memorial plaque in the street commemorates the events.
