The rowing club Bochum from 1920 was founded on August 11, 1920 and is thus the oldest water sports club in Bochum.

The boathouse was inaugurated on July 10th 11 months after the foundation of the association and one month after the construction period. The boathouse of the Bochum rowing club is located in the Gedern district of Witten . Is rowed on by the hydroelectric power plant Hohenstein accumulated Ruhr below the Berger monument . In 1922 the club became a member of the German Rowing Association and hosted the first Bochum autumn regatta on October 8, 1922. From 1929 a joint Bochum-Witten autumn regatta was organized. The women's division founded in 1932 was able to win its first victory in style rowing in 1936 . In 1938 the boathouse was expanded, but it was destroyed again by the Möhne disaster in 1943 .

From 1963 the first children's regattas for boys and girls were organized. In 1967 the boathouse was expanded again and a boathouse, the roof of which is used as a terrace and regatta stand, was added. For the 50th birthday, the association organized the German Rowing Day in Bochum on April 4th and 5th, 1970. A year later the sailing department was founded, which has its boathouse on Lake Kemnader . In 1983, the RV Bochum was allowed to organize the state decision for boys and girls together with the rowing club Witten for the first time . From 1998 the state decision took place annually in Bochum-Witten for 10 years. In 2002 the Ruhr Sprint was held for the first time on the Ruhr below the Berger monument. The club brought forth numerous participants in rowing world championships and Olympic Games, including Martin Müller-Falcke , Andreas Bech and Josephine Wartenberg .
