Gedern (Witten)

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Gedern is a district of Annen , a district of Witten in North Rhine-Westphalia . On December 31, 2018, it had a total of 60 inhabitants.

history

First mention

In 1351 Gedern is mentioned for the first time in the Volmarsteiner Lehnsregister Diderichs von Malingrode. Gedern formed five courtyards. Two of them were in the so-called Obergedern (see Gut Obergedern ) and three in the valley floodplain directly on the Ruhr . Since there were already five farms in this area, it can be assumed that Gedern must be much older. The farms were taxable to the Mallinckrodt House in Herdecke , who in turn were in the service of the Lords of Volmarstein.

Peasantry

During the industrialization of the region in the 19th century, Gedern remained rural.

division

In 1817, the district of Dortmund was founded in the newly established Prussian province of Westphalia . For Gedern this resulted in the division. The western part of Gedern fell to Annen in 1818 , the eastern part was assigned to the community of Ende , which in turn was located in the district of Hagen . With the incorporation of Annens in 1929, the western part of Gedern became part of Witten. Today Gedern is run as a district of Annen in the official district of the city. The eastern part of Gedern has belonged to the urban area of the neighboring town of Witten since the end of 1939 when it was annexed to Herdecke.

present

Gedern is extremely sparsely populated, some of the forests in the district are privately owned, in contrast to the majority of the Witten forest, which is administered by the city. The forests are freely accessible, however, there is a small-scale timber industry . The Ruhr meadows near Gedern are under nature protection ( nature reserve Ruhraue Witten-Gedern ).

school

In 1904 a primary school was set up in Gedern . The Witten animal shelter has been located in this school building since 1972 .
