The Rudolf Bultmann Institute for Hermeneutics is a research facility founded in 1963 in the Protestant theology department of the Philipps University of Marburg .

history

The Rudolf Bultmann Institute for Hermeneutics was founded in 1963 as the “Institute for Hermeneutics” by Ernst Fuchs , a student of Rudolf Bultmann . With its program, the institute is committed to the Marburg tradition of theological hermeneutics founded by Rudolf Bultmann and its continuation in the field of research on parables, images and metaphors, particularly suggested by Ernst Fuchs.

The founder of the Ernst Fuchs Institute worked as a professor for the New Testament in Marburg between 1961 and 1970 . In 2009, on the occasion of Rudolf Bultmann's 125th birthday, the institute was renamed “Rudolf Bultmann Institute for Hermeneutics”. Ernst Fuchs' successors as directors of the institute were professors of the New Testament and Systematic Theology, Gerd Schunack, Dietrich Korsch and Jörg Lauster . Malte Dominik Krüger has headed the institute since 2016 ; deputy director is Angela Standhartinger .

The institute serves the interdisciplinary and also international exchange in the field of theological, philosophical and cultural hermeneutics. Guests of the institute were e.g. B. Hans Jonas , Karl Rahner , James M. Robinson , Gerhard Ebeling , Dorothee Sölle , Hans Weder , Ingolf U. Dalferth and Markus Gabriel . The International Bultmann Lecture , which takes place every two years, was held for the first time in 2017 . The current lecture is entitled What is Reality? New Realism and Hermeneutic Theology published. Since 2018, the institute - together with the Rudolf Bultmann Society for Hermeneutic Theology e. V. and the Evangelical Church of Kurhessen-Waldeck - the Rudolf Bultmann Prize for Hermeneutics. This honors outstanding dissertations and habilitations in the field of theological, philosophical and cultural hermeneutics. The current awardee is David W. Congdon from Princeton with his dissertation The Mission of Demythologizing. Rudolf Bultmann's Dialectical Theology . The Evangelical Picture Day has also been held every two years since 2018, carried out in cooperation with the Marburg Institute for Church Construction and Church Art of the Present .
