Rudolf Albrecht (astrophysicist)

Rudolf Albrecht (born August 9, 1946 ) is an Austrian astrophysicist .

Career

He grew up as the son of a company founder and a librarian in the 22nd district of Vienna with a younger brother. Even as a teenager he was interested in astronomy and, in addition to his school days, gave guided tours of the Urania observatory in Vienna. Albrecht later graduated from the Gymnasium Franklinstrasse 21 in Vienna. After graduating from the army, he began studying astrophysics against his father's will. He received his doctorate in 1970 from the University of Vienna and after obtaining his license to practice his dissertation on “The determination of absolute self-movements in seven selected areas and the creation of a suitable reduction program for electronic calculation”, he worked at the Lowell Observatory in Flagstaff, Arizona.

He married the painter Katalin Nagy in the early 1980s .

Until 1981 he worked as an assistant professor at the university. He completed several months of research at large observatories, including the European Southern Observatory (Chile), the Cerro Tololo Inter-American Observatory (Chile) and the Kitt Peak National Observatory (Arizona, USA). Between 1981 and 1984 Albrecht worked at the Space Telescope Science Institute in Baltimore before moving to the Space Telescope European Coordinating Facility , where he worked until 2008. Furthermore, Albrecht was head of the European Hubble coordination office in Garching.

Rudolf Albrecht is a member of the United Nations (UN) asteroid team and Senior Advisor in the Austrian Space Forum.
