Rudolf Bunge (born March 27, 1836 in Koethen , † May 5, 1907 in Halle (Saale) ; pseudonym Bruno Rudolph ) was a German poet , playwright and librettist .

Life

Bunge comes from the upper middle class, his parents had a large business, which Bunge ran after his father's death. It was only when he handed over the management of the business to his younger brother that he was able to devote himself more to writing. He is the author of the patriotic tragedy The Duke of Courland , which depicts the robbery of Strasbourg in the Thirty Years' War and was therefore played on many German stages after the return of German troops from France (after it was premiered in Leipzig in 1870). The piece met the anti-French mood prevailing at the time and was accordingly popular.

His opera libretto based on Scheffel's bestseller Der Trompeter von Säckingen was set to music by Victor E. Nessler .
