Rudolf Horkheimer (born February 14, 1894 in Rottenburg am Neckar , † February 15, 1982 in Konstanz ) was a German engineer and radio technology pioneer.

Life

Horkheimer was of Jewish origin. He made his first attempts at sending when he was a schoolboy. In the 1920s, Horkheimer built numerous transmission and reception systems for shortwave and operated them initially under the call sign K-Y8, later under K4YAE. He was considered an expert in high frequency issues. In 1923 he was fined three million marks (inflation money) for blackmailing because he had violated the imperial law on telegraphs from 1892. This made him the first radio amateur to be punished for this .

In 1938 he had to emigrate to Bolivia , where he operated a shortwave station with the callsign CP6XF. In 1958 he returned to Germany. In 1970 he passed the amateur radio exam again.

The German Amateur Radio Club (DARC) has been awarding the Horkheimer Prize, named after Rudolf Horkheimer, annually since 1992 for exceptional achievements in amateur radio .
