Rudolf Mansfeld

Rudolf Albert Otto Mansfeld (born January 17, 1901 in Weißensee , † November 30, 1960 in Gatersleben ) was a German botanist. Its official botanical author abbreviation is “ Mansf. "

Life

Mansfeld was a PhD botanist and curator at the Botanical Garden and Museum in Berlin-Dahlem, where he succeeded Rudolf Schlechter . After the Second World War he was at the later Leibniz Institute for Plant Genetics and Crop Plant Research in Gatersleben . In 1949 he succeeded Werner Rothmaler as head of department and was last head of the systematics and assortment department. He had the title of professor.

He is known for his directory of agricultural and horticultural crops (excluding ornamental plants) , which has also been translated into English. He published it with several other scientists from the institute and it contained around 1,800 species on 669 pages. It is known as the Mansfeld Directory (in English Mansfeld Encyclopaedia). He created genetic databases and dealt with the systematics of cultivated plants.

He was also a specialist in orchids and milkweed plants .

In 1960 he was elected a member of the Leopoldina .

The Rudolf Mansfeld Prize for Crop Plant Research has been awarded in Gatersleben since 1997.
