Rue89 is an online magazine that was founded by former journalists from the Liberation daily newspaper on May 6, 2007, during the second round of the French presidential campaign. Rue89 was founded in May 2007 by Pierre Haski (President of the Rue89 company and Public Relations Director), Laurent Mauriac (General Manager), Pascal Riché (Editor-in-Chief), Arnaud Aubron (Webmaster / Editor) and Michel Levy-Provencal . The editorial office is currently 24, rue de l'Est in the 20th arrondissement.
Pascal Riche chose the name "Rue89" (= street 89) because it should be a place of encounter and discussion and the number 89 to the fall of the Berlin Wall (1989), the French Revolution (1789) and the emergence of the World Wide Web ( 1989) remember. Since May 14, 2007, Rue89 has become more and more popular among users. She reported the absence of Cecilia Sarkozy during the second round of the presidential campaign and spread the news that the weekly Le Journal du Dimanche had withheld information at the last minute. Since June 2010 there has been a monthly printed edition with the most important articles published on the Internet in the previous month. The print edition was discontinued in 2012.
In December 2011 the takeover by the Nouvel Observateur was announced.
