The Rue de la République in Marseille , formerly Rue Impériale, is one of that of Napoleon III. established boulevard created by the Second Empire . It leads over very hilly terrain from the old to the new port of the city. It is a street breakthrough in the style of the Paris urban operations by Georges-Eugène Haussmann .

The road construction was pre -financed by the owner of the Marseilles port company Jules Mirès . The road breakthrough in the densely populated area of the old town required the demolition of 935 houses. Rue Impériale was opened in 1864 . Its purpose of bringing the upper bourgeoisie who had emigrated to the 6th arrondissement of the city back to the center of the city through attractive housing was only partially achieved. The mainly middle-class and middle-class tenants emigrated to an increasing extent at the end of the 20th century. Instead, the proportion of low-income immigrants increased. The owners, from 1987 a subsidiary of the food company Danone , later the American pension fund Lone Star (investment company) , on the other hand, are pursuing the goal of creating high-priced rental properties through luxury renovations as part of the Euromediterrannée urban renewal project and gentrification of the district, but so far only partially succeeded.
