history

Marseille, high-rise la Marseillaise under construction, March 2017

The project came into being in 1989 on the initiative of then mayor Robert Vigouroux . The model was the successful redesign of the district around the Lyon-Part-Dieu train station into a central business district of the city of Lyon . The funds used come from the French state, the affected municipalities and regions, the city of Marseille, the European Union, but also from private investors. The contract to establish an Etablissement Public d'Aménagement (EPA) was signed on April 26, 1994. The project was supposed to be completed in 2012, but it has moved into a second phase and at the beginning of 2013 it is still a major construction site.

The districts of La Belle de mai , Saint-Charles , La Joliette et Arenc and the Rue de la République are included . Urban renewal refers to a total area of 3.1 km² in the center of Marseille, in the course of which residential areas that have been neglected for decades (with a low-income population with a high proportion of immigrants, mainly from the Maghreb ) and the like. a. to be replaced by hundreds of thousands of square meters of office space (" gentrification ").

Access is provided by the Marseille Metro and the new T2 line of the Marseille tram . The road tunnel de la Major , opened in December 2002, frees the redevelopment area from through traffic. A passenger port opened in 2005 for the booming cruise business will enable Marseille to rival Genoa and Barcelona in this regard .

Along the quayside road Les Quais d'Arenc , the modern skyline of a typical waterfront development is in the making: a 135 m high skyscraper by Jean Nouvel , the Tour La Marseillaise , should be completed in 2013; the laying of the foundation stone took place on December 17, 2014 Completion is now planned for 2018, in the same year the Tour Horizon by Yves Lion with a height of 113 m and the H99 by Jean-Baptiste Piétri (99.9 m) are to be completed. Less high (31 m) is Le Balthazar , an office building designed by Roland Carta for the Constructa group and completed in 2014.

The event center Le Silo , also created by Roland Carta , is a converted former grain store. The former tobacco factory in the Belle-de-Mai district (commonly known as the Friche la Belle de Mai ) has been converted into a media and cultural center. The city archive of Marseille and the stocks of the Mareiller museums are also housed here.

criticism

The criticism of the project focuses on the accusation that the previous residents of the redevelopment areas are being evicted as planned. The Un Center Ville pour Tous association supports these disadvantaged groups.
