The SCR was based on the Porsche 911 SC. It had a performance- optimized naturally aspirated engine enlarged to 3.2 liters , which was based on the 3.0-liter engine of the SC. With the SCR, Ruf wanted to offer an alternative to the 911 fans who mourned the legendary RS 2.7 and were disappointed with the 911SC. The transmission of the SCR was based on the 915 transmission, which had been built since 1971, but had a transmission oil cooler. In addition, the SCR had various other performance-optimizing and chassis-related improvements:

  • Front apron with integrated oil cooler and air ducts for the internally ventilated disc brakes
  • GFK rear wing based on the original Turbo from 1974 with improved intake air duct
  • Changed gear ratio with longer 5th gear, optionally 28/22 or 29/22 with adjusted 4th gear 26/25. 40% to 80% - limited slip differential
  • Front strut bar
  • Special exhaust with two tailpipes each left and right, with a very dominant sound
  • special stabilizers with a larger diameter, which are more torsion-resistant and allow less side tilt than the basic model
  • lower Ruf chassis with Bilstein gas pressure dampers
  • Roof spoiler, later with integrated third brake light
  • Ruf rear panel with integrated rear fog lights.

Were optional

  • Front tires 205 / 55VR on 7x16 and rear tires 225 / 50VR on 8x16 on the rim in the classic Ruf design
  • Spartan equipment only with rubber mats and bucket seats
  • smaller (360 mm) and thickly padded Ruf leather steering wheel
  • Shout gear knob
  • Recaro leather sports seats
  • Replacement of the standard side mirrors with those of the BMW E30.

The 3.2-liter engine of the SCR is neither in bore nor in stroke identical to the 3.2-liter engine later offered by Porsche itself, initially as the Carrera SC and later as the Carrera.

Ruf stated the technical data of the engine on the data sheet dated January 1, 1981 as follows (series engine 3.2 in brackets): bore 98mm (95mm), stroke 70.4mm (74.4mm), displacement 3185ccm (3164ccm), compression 9, 8: 1 (10.3: 1), 160kw / 217PS, 280Nm at 4100 −1 . The engine conversion kit, like some other parts, is still available.

The performance of the Ruf SCR: 0–100 km / h: 5.7 s, 0–200 km / h: 21.7 s, top speed: 255.3 km / h.

While Porsche boss Prof. Ernst Fuhrmann himself commented negatively on the 911, the SCR underwent a detailed test in the 13/1978 issue of auto motor und sport under the title Porsche's good reputation and was completely convincing. In summary, it was stated: “Those most loyal Porsche buyers will therefore remain with the Zuffenhausen-based company. You can continue to conquer your Porsche 'naturally', just as Ferry once created it. Porsche's good reputation will thus also be preserved for the 'Cast Iron'. "

In the data comparison, the SCR holds its own against the 911SC, Carrera 3.0, Carrera RS, Carrera RS 2.7, Turbo 3.0, Turbo 3.3 and Turbo 3.3 Ruf. There were only the Turbo 3.3 and Tubo 3.3. Ruf with 260.9km / h and 262.8km / h a touch faster. But by the time the top speed was played out, the SCR had long escaped them on the winding track.

Only about 50 of the SCR types were built between 1978–1983; the Carrera 3.0 models from the 76 and 77 model series and the 911SC from the 78/79 and 80 model series were suitable for conversion. The SCR cost 65,000 in 1978 DM.
