Rufford Abbey was a Cistercian monk abbey in England . The monastery is on the left bank of Rainworth Water in Sherwood Forest in Nottinghamshire , about 3 km south of Ollerton.
history
The foundation was made by Gilbert de Gant, 1st Earl of Lincoln , around the year 1147. The founding convent came from Rievaulx Abbey in Yorkshire , a subsidiary of Clairvaux Primary Abbey . At the beginning of the 14th century the monastery had acquired some prosperity, but it became impoverished by the beginning of the 15th century. The penultimate abbot, Rowland Blyton, became abbot of Rievaulx in 1533. The monastery was dissolved in 1536 after it was rated as a smaller monastery. The last abbot, Thomas Doncaster, received a severance payment of £ 25. The monastery property later passed to the Talbot family. In 1626 the house was sold to Sir George Savile. English Heritage later acquired the estate while the park is looked after by Nottingham Country Council.
Plant and buildings
The plan shows that the original building corresponded to what is usual in Cistercian complexes (enclosure to the right (south) of the three-aisled church with a transept and straight choir closure). The remains of the abbey have been integrated into the existing manor house (on the former Konversenbau). Its heavily damaged north and east wings from the 17th century were demolished in 1956. The western part of the cloister has been preserved. Two ice cellars from around 1820 still stand around the building.
