Different call pillars

A paging column is a column-shaped telephone device that is used to establish a connection with a specific conversation partner . Call points are mainly used to contact with a taxi rank, or a taxi central receiving ( Taxirufsäule ), an emergency stopped ( emergency telephone ), or the breakdown service to call. However, there are other uses as well. Call columns are mainly located in public places or on traffic routes; the location can be identified by signposting. The operation of a call column is free of charge and easy to understand and is mostly done by pressing a call lever or call button.

The spread and importance of call pillars has been suppressed for various reasons. In particular, the emergence of the cell phone , frequent vandalism and the free emergency call in a telephone booth have led to the fact that call columns are rarely installed and existing call columns are even dismantled.

In an emergency, call columns have the advantage that the remote station can immediately determine the location of the person seeking help via the call column. Anyone who reports an emergency with their mobile phone is not always able to give their exact location while on the move.

technology

Call columns have different functions depending on the year of construction and location. In the simplest case, it is an analog intercom or a simplified analog telephone . But ISDN variants with S 0 and U interfaces as well as modern call pillars with Ethernet interfaces and VoIP are used. There are also versions that work with GSM mobile radio and solar cells for power supply. These are mainly used for motorway construction sites and similar purposes where hard-wired connections are not available. Most call pillars have a hands-free facility, and with a few models, when the call lever is operated, a camera image is also transmitted in addition to the audio connection to the control center.

The electronics required for this are housed in a free-standing, head-high column. A device installed on or in a wall can perform the same function. The housing of the call column is usually made of sturdy plastic or metal and designed in such a way that it catches the eye on the one hand and offers a certain resistance to vandalism on the other.

use

Call pillars are designed so that users do not need any special knowledge or authorization to operate them. As a rule, only a specific call partner can be reached using the call column by pressing a call lever or call button. For example, it is used in public streets to order a taxi or, in some regions, to request an on- call bus at a stop. Emergency telephones that are set up in endangered urban areas, at rural hot spots, in industrial plants or at train stations are used to make an emergency call to the police , fire brigade , rescue service or a security service (see also emergency telephone ). In addition, there are call boxes at regular intervals on trunk roads with which motorists can request help in the event of a vehicle breakdown, for example.

A special form of a call column is the blue-red-colored "SOS and INFO" column used at train stations. Here you have both the possibility to make an emergency call and to receive information about the timetable. Call columns are also used on company premises in order to offer customers and suppliers the opportunity to contact company staff outside of business hours or in remote locations.
