Geek code

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Geek Code is an invention by Robert A. Hayden and is usually hidden in the headers of emails or Usenet postings. It consists of a sequence of signs, each of which has a specific, well-defined meaning. Furthermore, it is an inside joke, i.e. a self-ironic way of looking at the computer or hacker culture.

The geek code is used to describe the sender or author. The first combination of letters is an abbreviation for the fundamental characterization of the author (going beyond the mere geek self-attribution); the following letters and symbols describe individual aspects of the nature and behavior of the author in more detail. In most cases, the weighting for a certain property is represented by successive plus or minus signs (or alternatively hyphens ). The appearance of the geek code is vaguely reminiscent of a command line call to a computer program with its call parameters .

There are several programs on the internet that can generate or decode geek code (make it readable for the uninitiated).

A proposed successor to the Geek Code is the OmniCode .

example

For example, a geek code would be:

GIT d s+:- a-- C++ UL++++ P-- L+++ E--- W++ N++ o-- K w- O---- M+
V-- PS+ PE Y+ PGP++ t-- 5++ X++ R-- tv- b++ DI D++ G- e h-- r y+

( Mouseover texts accordingly)

This geek is a GIT (Geek of Information Technology). For example, the "s" stands for shape , i.e. the size of the person and (separated by a colon) their width. Now there is a suitable scale for this area of geek code. The following applies to the part before the colon in Shape :

s+++ I usually have to duck through doors.
s++ I'm a basketball candidate. (Ich bin ein Basketballkandidat)
s+ I'm a little taller than most.
s I'm an average geek. (Ich bin ein durchschnittlicher Geek)
s- I look up to most people. (Ich schaue zu den meisten Leuten hinauf)
s-- I look up to damn near everybody. (Ich schaue zu verdammt fast jedem hinauf)
s--- I take a phone book with me when I go out so I can eat dinner.

the following scale applies to the part after the colon:

s+++ I take up three movie seats. (Ich nehme drei Kinositze in Anspruch)
s++  I'm a linebacker candidate. (Ich bin ein Linebacker-Kandidat)
s+ I'm a little rounder than most.
s I'm an average geek. (Ich bin ein durchschnittlicher Geek)
s- Everybody tells me to gain a few pounds.
s-- I tend to have to fight against a strong breeze.
s--- My bones are poking through my skin. (Meine Knochen stehen heraus)

An "s +: -" would mean the following: I'm a little taller than most and everybody tells me to gain a few pounds. (I'm a little taller than most and everyone tells me to put on a few pounds.)
