Rufus is a free application that can create bootable (or bootable ) USB disks. It has been developed by Pete Batard since 2011 and is only available for Windows .

Rufus can run up to and including version 2.18 from Windows XP and from version 3.0 from Windows 7 without setup ( portable ) and supports MS-DOS , FreeDOS and ISO images of installation media from Windows and various Linux distributions . The boot loader ( SYSLINUX ) is recognized automatically. USB media can be written to in either ISO or dd mode. Both bootable BIOS and UEFI media are supported.

Rufus claims to write significantly faster than UNetbootin .
