Rufus Payne (* in Greenville , Alabama , † March 17, 1939 in Montgomery ) was an American blues musician . He was better known by his nickname Tee Tot .

Live and act

Rufus Payne was born on an unknown date in Greenville, Alabama. He was best known as a mentor to Hank Williams . Through his influence and exposure to blues and other African American music, Williams successfully combined hillbilly , folk and blues into his unique style. Part of Williams’s career is thus Payne’s credit.

Many details from Payne's life are still unknown, apart from his date of birth, his parents are also unknown according to the death certificate . According to the American historian Alice Harp, he was born in Sandy Ridge, Alabama, around 1884.

Payne died on March 17, 1939 in a charity hospital in Montgomery, his age has been given as probably 55 years. He was buried in Lincoln Cemetery in Montgomery. His grave is unknown, but a memorial stands near the entrance to the cemetery.
