Greenville (also known as Buttsville ) is a city in Butler County , Alabama and its administrative seat . At the 2000 US census , the city had 7,228 residents.
history
The first settlers came to Greenville in 1819. It was originally called Buttsville, but immigrants from Greenville, South Carolina called it Greenville because the oak trees reminded them of their homeland.
After the city became a county seat in 1822, it was renamed Greenville to commemorate the many settlers from South Carolina .
During the Second World War there was a prison camp for German soldiers in the city.

Demographics
In the 2000 census, 7228 inhabitants, 2919 households and 1929 families were counted. The population density was 131.9 inhabitants per km 2 . 50.69% of all Greenville residents are white and 48.31% are African-American . Under 18 years old was 26.8%, 65 or older 18.3%. The median age in Greenville was 38, with 44.7% men and 55.3% women. The average income was 22,106 US dollars . 30.4% of the population lived below the poverty line.

Trivia
The city won on 14 August 2005 in game show My Kind Of Town of ABC . In 2006 the film Honeydripper was shot in and around the city . Many residents, including the church choir, played some of the roles in the film.
