Tschirland ( Italian Cirlano ) is a fraction of the municipality of Naturns in South Tyrol ( Italy ) with about 400 inhabitants.

location

Tschirland is located in Vinschgau on the orographic right side of the Etsch Valley . The village lies on a flattening of the Tablander alluvial cone , around 1 km southwest of Naturns at an altitude of around 578  m slm . It is 200 m to the Adige river flowing by to the north and about 400 m to the state road 38 also in the north.

history

In 1143, Tschirland was first mentioned as "Sirna" in a papal confirmation of ownership of the Weingarten Monastery, which was wealthy here . It is believed that as early as the 1st or 2nd century AD, a Celtic landowner named Cernius settled on the site of today's Tschirland, from which the name "Tschirland" ("Cernius → Cerniacum") was derived. He probably traded there on the Via Claudia Augusta north of Tschirland . An indication of this could be the ruins of the Laurentius Church and the associated hostel between Tschirland and Staben .

Further names and development of names: 1155 Schirnon, 1278 Schirnun, 1297 Schirnan, 1317 Tschyrnan de valle Uenusta, 1369 Tschirnan, 1437 Schirnaw, 1445 Schirnach, 1638 Tschürle, 1687 Tschyrlon, 1722 Tschirland.

St. Oswald

The church consecrated to Saint Oswald is first mentioned in 1278; the original chapel was replaced by a late Gothic new building in 1433. In the 17th century, the church, equipped with an elegant pointed tower, was redesigned with new round arch and semicircular windows. The wall paintings from 1749 (cross with angels making music and King David) and the side altar paintings (Mary with Christ Child, St. Valentine with Cosmas and Damian) were made by the Naturns artist Simon Ybertracher (1694–1772). The high altar from 1668 (with St. Oswald on the predella) was designed by Oswald Krad from Bozen .
