Ruggeri 140 is a vine rootstock that Antonio Ruggeri grew in Italy in 1896 for the biotechnological control of root aphid . In the case of the Vitis vinifera varieties, it leads to very strong growth and is particularly suitable for lime-rich, extremely dry and skeletal soils.

Is an interspecific cross between Vitis berlandieri Resseguier 2 × Vitis rupestris du Lot and was bred by Antonio Ruggeri in Palermo in Sicily in 1896 .
Ampelographic features
- Shoot tip: hairy like a cobweb with a reddish edge
- Full-grown leaves: small, thick, shiny, petiole open, lyre-shaped; The underside of the leaf is almost smooth, the veins are slightly hairy, the teeth are medium-sized
- Shoots: ribbed, reddish, slightly hairy

Properties - use
A special feature of the rootstock is that it causes the Vitis vinifera varieties to grow very strongly. This leads to a delay in ripening (grapes and wood), which is disadvantageous in northern wine-growing regions, especially in later years. On the other hand, it is very suitable for very dry locations because of its high drought tolerance. Like no other type of underlay, it tolerates a very high salt content in the soil and has a high tolerance to lime ( activated lime tolerance ~ 30%, IPC 60).
