Ruggero Verity , also Roger Verity , (born May 20, 1883 in Florence , † March 4, 1959 in Fiesole near Florence) was an Italian butterfly collector and lepidopterist .

His focus was clearly on his collection, which he did not keep very carefully. He bought many pieces from dealers, mainly from Staudinger & Bang-Haas and the Querci family. Querci and his wife collected and prepared for him most of their lives.

Ruggero Verity described, mostly inadequate and imprecise, about 2000 species, subspecies, exegetes, races and forms, mostly from the superfamily of the Papilionoidea and the family of the rams (Zygaenidae). Most of the butterflies came from Europe. In addition, he also collected butterflies from Palaearctic Asia, Africa and Arctic North America.

The most important of his more than 150 publications are Rhopalocera Palaearctica and Le farfalle diurne d'Italia .

collection

Large parts of his collection went to the Museo Zoologico de la Specola in Florence.

Criticism of its taxonomy

Verity's view of subspecific taxa , as was common in its time and before, especially the local races and subspecies , are not considered valid taxons today. Its handling is unusual. In the beginning he used subspecies and later replaced them with exegete , although some of these do not fit the international rules for zoological nomenclature , which after the two-part name from genus and species requires that of the subordinate taxon as the third name. But he described exegetes z. B. as 'southern exegete' of 'genus type' instead of 'genus type exegete'. He replaced the subspecies as defined in the zoological nomenclature with the term race and criticized others for using the term subspecies.
