Ruggles Island ( Spanish : Isla Calista ) is an uninhabited island in the Falkland Islands . It lies 340 meters from Lafonia , the southern peninsula of East Falkland , and is separated from it by the Ruggles Pass . Speedwell Island is in the north of the island .
There have been two ship accidents on the coast of Ruggles Island in the past :
- In September 1860, the American frigate Sea Ranger sank off the coast.
- In September 1885 there was a second accident. The Italian ship Luigrya had a number of marble statues loaded in the hold when it sank offshore. After the disaster, many divers in the area claimed they saw the statues. But none of them could prove anything. It wasn't until 1994 that a small team of divers ventured to the site and found the statues intact. After more than a hundred years they could then be recovered.
