The Ruhstein bei Hüttendorf , also known as the Großer Stein , is a historic Ruhstein in the Hüttendorf district of Erlangen .

Location

The Ruhstein is located about 900 meters northeast of the center of Hüttendorf. It is located in the middle of the Regnitzholz forest on the former Kirchenweg to Eltersdorf , which today is only recognizable as an overgrown ravine .

description

The resting stone consists of a sandstone slab that is held together by four metal clips with two bases. According to a description from the 1940s, the characters "ZO 1661" were carved on the front broadside. Due to weathering or heavy moss , the lettering is currently not recognizable. The year 1894, which was previously carved in, can no longer be found in one of the iron brackets that may have been renewed in the meantime.

history

Nothing is known about the period during which the stone was erected. Like most of the rest stones that have survived, it probably dates from the period between the 16th and 19th centuries, when farmers , servants , maidservants , messengers , peddlers and traders still carried heavy loads with back carriers or on their heads. The earlier visible dates 1661 and 1894 could be an indication of the year of installation or repair.

A traditional legend tells of a maid who was traveling with a back carrier and wanted to rest here. Since it had rained before, the ground was wet, so the woman slipped and was strangled by the strap of the stretcher.

With the construction of the Main-Danube Canal , the immediate vicinity of the Ruhstein was permanently changed. The once clearly visible hall monument has since been off the beaten track and has largely been forgotten. In contrast to comparable rest benches in the area, it is not included in the list of monuments of the Bavarian State Office for Monument Preservation .
