Rula Ghani

Rula Ghani (born in 1948 as Rula Saade ) is the wife of the Afghan President Ashraf Ghani Ahmadsai and thus “ First Lady ” of Afghanistan. She is from Lebanon and has Lebanese and US citizenship. Rula Ghani is the first Christian first wife of Afghanistan, a country with over 99.9% Muslim population.

She studied at the American University of Beirut , where she met Ashraf Ghani in 1973. The 1980s and 1990s both spent in the United States .

As one of the few wives of Afghan politicians, she presented herself in public and supported her husband in the election campaign. She also spoke at election campaign events and was the first First Lady of Afghanistan to be praised by her husband in his inaugural address, which attracted a great deal of attention in the country and was considered a “taboo break” in the media. Afghan women's rights activists welcomed her presence and expressed the expectation that she would contribute to positive women's politics.

The couple has two children. One of them is the artist Mariam Ghani .
