Round hill on the Fan Foel
The Bronze Age round hill on Fan Foel (780 m high) in the Black Mountains (Gaelic Y Mynydd Du ), in Carmarthenshire in Wales , was excavated in 2004/2005. The condition of the burial mound was examined in 2002. The hill was at great risk from erosion.
The low stone mound covered a roughly centrally located stone box , which was surrounded by an approximately 11.0 m large curb ring. The remaining mound was removed, the stone box and the curbs were excavated.
The stone box was about a meter long and 0.5 m wide. It contained broken pottery, a pile of burned bones, and several flint tools . A second cremation was found in the surrounding stone along with fragments of a collar urn.
The surviving elements of the monument were protected under mats and covered with stones and turf.
