Runestone from Schleswig Cathedral
The rune stone from the Schleswig Cathedral ( Samnordisk runtextdatabas DR 6) was found in the foundation of the Schleswig Cathedral in Schleswig in Schleswig-Holstein in 1897 . The ornamentation shows that it was made by a Swede.
The rune stone is one of the 30 England rune stones , dates from the first half of the 11th century and has been used as a spoiler . Its location establishes a link between Haithabu , the location of the rune stones DR 1 to DR 4, and Schleswig. Another rune stone that was also used was found in the Gottorf bastion.
The runestone was placed in memory of a man who died in a place called Skia (in Old Norse ) in England. According to Omeljan Pritsak , Skia was likely Shoebury in Essex or Skidby in Yorkshire .
The mutilated inscription reads: ... set the stone in memory of ... dead ... and Guðmundr carved the runes. (He) rests in Skia in England. Christian ...
