Runestones on the Korpa bro

Runic stones Sö 139 and Sö 140

The rune stones on Korpa bro ( Samnordisk runtextdatabas Sö 139 and Sö 140 - the latter is also called “Joars sten”) are on Lidsvägen in Ludgo between Lid and Aspa, near Nyköping in Södermanland in Sweden .

The rune stone Sö 139, in contrast to Sö 140, which is next door, conveys a Christian message. The ornament consists of a ribbon of snakes, which is connected at the base with an Irish belt . Inside the loop there is a simple Christian cross.

The text reads: “Sten placed this stone at Ashed. Christ gave relief to her soul, a good woman ... Finn scratched the runes ”.

The rune stone Sö 140 (also rune stone from Jursta) was found in Juresta in 1899. The head and tail of the snake ornament , shown in the bird's eye view (Swedish: Fågelperspektiven ; in which the snake is shown from above), point outwards to the edges of the stone instead of inwards as usual.

The somewhat puzzling text reads: "Sandar put this stone after Joar (or: Ivar), his wife". The rest is rather incomprehensible. The text ends with the pagan formula "Thor protect".

The main difficulty with the still controversial interpretation of the text lies in the cross-shaped binding rune that is at the top of the loop, where the Christian cross is usually to be found. The runologist Erik Brate (1857–1924), who was the first to research the stone in 1899, compared the text with Danish stones, on which the god Thor is also mentioned. Its interpretation is widespread. Others have assumed that it is the Verte "Sejda" and an attack on the god Tor.

Nearby are the rune stones of Grinda . Four more rune stones are about 5.5 kilometers east on the Aspa Bro.

Individual evidence

  1. Like the Latin script, the runic script also combines two letters into one symbol. These "tie runes" or ligatures are marked in the scientific transcription with a bow above the line.
