Runestones from Övra Bägby
The rune stones from Övra Bägby are east of the main road, south of Gärdslösa on the Swedish island of Öland . On the old country road that runs parallel there are two rune stones on either side of a stream. They were found in a bridge and came to their current locations in 1634.
The southern rune stone Oil 39 is made of limestone and is 195 cm high, 95 cm wide and 18 cm thick. The runes are about 12 cm high.
It was in a photo taken before 1966 in a stone wall that has since been removed. The inscription was laid out in color in 1987. The text in the serpentine ribbon reads: “Sven did (this) after his father vicar; the (only surviving) son carved the stone himself. "
The northern rune stone Oil 40 is also made of limestone and is almost rectangular, 218 cm high, 150 cm wide and 11 cm thick. The runes are 14 to 18 cm high. From the names it can be concluded that U 40 is older than U 39, because only Sven remains on the latter. The inscription was laid out in color in 1987 and 2004. The text in the serpentine ribbon reads: "Gudbrand and Sven set this stone after their good brothers Asvald and Helge."
The Gårdløsafibel
The Gårdløsafibel ( Swedish Gårdløsafibulaen ) DR EM85; 128A $ U was found in a woman's grave in Gårdlösa and is in the Statens Historiske Museum, Stockholm (SHM 25302). It comes from the Iron Age (210–260 AD). The fibula is a crossbow brooch made of silver with an urnordian inscription in the older Futhark . The runic inscription is on the right side of the foot. The inscription reads:
en Unwōd;
translated: I, the breakdown / the silence / reluctance.
The word is likely a male name that may have belonged to the person who made the fibula or gave / gifted to the woman in the grave.
