The Rostock Rungestraße is a street in the historic center of the Hanseatic city and connects the University Square with the Wall Street . It is part of the former Rostock Neustadt and approved for motor traffic.

course

The rather narrow Rungestrasse is connected to the Universitätsplatz in the northwest, and then bends in a southeastern direction. Halfway through its course, the short street Rostocker Heide bends in an easterly direction , shortly afterwards the Altbettelmönchstraße bends to the east. On the west side you can see the Fraterhaus of the Brothers of Living Together , the Michaeliskloster , on the east side it is an unkempt parking lot in its southern section. Ultimately it flows into Wallstrasse. The Rostocker Hof building is adjacent to Rungestrasse .

history

Rungestrasse was first mentioned in 1280 as platea preconis, which means something like (old) Büttelstrasse . It can therefore be assumed that the bailiffs, i.e. the servants of the court, had their domicile and their offices in this street. Because of its peripheral location in the shadow of the Hopfenmarkt (today's Universitätsplatz), members of the middle and lower classes of the population lived in Alte Büttelstrasse. Accordingly, in the Middle Ages it was only built with booths, in the southern section there were even small farms.

In 1742 the city's great son, Gebhard Leberecht von Blücher , who later became the winner of Waterloo , was born on Alte Büttelstrasse . In his honor, the street was named Blücherstraße from 1863 to 1947 . In the nights of bombing at the end of April 1942, today's Rungestrasse was completely destroyed. In 1947, Blücherstrasse was renamed Rungestrasse after Hans Runge . Hinrich Runge, a stonemason by trade, was the leader of the anti-Council opposition in the " Rostock Cathedral Feud ". He was executed in 1491. On its northern section, Rungestrasse was provided with modern buildings. Coordinates: 54 ° 5 ′ 16 ″  N , 12 ° 8 ′ 12 ″  E
