The Altbettelmönchstraße is a short connecting route in the historic city center of Rostock . It connects Schwaansche Strasse in the west with Rungestrasse in the east and bends slightly to the south. It is part of the historic Rostock Neustadt .

history

The street was mentioned for the first time in 1594 under the name Im Green Paths . The name is explained by the fact that agriculture was practiced in this area of the city periphery in Hanseatic times and the residents were closely related to the city field mark south of the Rostock city wall . All streets south of the Hopfenmarkt, today's Universitätsplatz , were loosely built up into the early modern period and had an almost rural character.

Dominating on the south side of today's Altbettelmönchstraße is the Fraterhaus of the Brothers of Living Together , which is also known as Michaeliskloster . This monk-like community built its unadorned Gothic church in the 15th century . On the north side of the street, however, there were eight stalls that were managed by the Michaelis Brothers until the Reformation . After the Reformation, the Michaeliskirche was mainly used as a warehouse, so it is often referred to as a hay store in pre-war literature.

In the course of the development of the south side of the hop market with buildings of the ducal, later grand ducal sovereignty in the 18th century, a parade ground was set up on the north side of the street. In the late 19th century, the building of the Rostock district and regional court with an attached remand prison was built on the north side.

In view of the new development, the name Im Grünen Weg was changed to Altbettelmönchstraße at the beginning of the 20th century. It is a corruption of the street name Alte Büttelstraße , which the nearby Rungestraße originally carried. The Michaelis Brothers were never mendicant monks .

In the nights of bombing at the end of April 1942 , the courthouse was destroyed except for the remand prison, but the prison was retained and also served as a pre-trial detention center in GDR times, which was demolished after the fall of the Wall .

In 1942 the Fraterhaus was only a ruin, the choir in the east was restored in the 1950s; the west wing, on the other hand, did not regain its historic appearance until 1994. The library of the Philosophy and Theology departments of the Rostock University is now located in the western part, and a parish hall of the Methodist community in the eastern part .

At the place of the detention center, the first Rostock shopping mall was built in the mid-1990s with the Rostocker Hof .

With a modern row of shops on the one hand and a medieval monastery church on the other, Altbettelmönchstraße has a strong architectural contrast.
