history

Administration building of the University of Rostock in Schwaanschen Strasse

Schwaansche Strasse was first mentioned as platea Sywan in 1272. It is debatable whether their name comes from the small Mecklenburg town of Schwaan or from a merchant family of the same name. It led a shadowy existence in medieval Rostock and was accordingly only built with booths, but not with gabled houses. Rather, it served as the back yard of the houses on Hopfenmarkt, today's Universitätsplatz. It became more important in the 16th century when the Fraterhaus of the Brothers of Living Together , the Michaeliskloster , was built on its east side . In the course of the development of the southern side of the Hopfenmarkt with houses belonging to the Mecklenburg territorial rulers in the 18th century, the buildings on Schwaanschen Strasse served as their backyard. In the 19th century, several brick buildings in the neo-renaissance style were built on Schwaanschen Strasse . In the nights of bombing at the end of April 1942, the northeast side of Schwaanschen Strasse was severely damaged, but the west side remained intact.

Worth seeing

Two half-timbered houses from the late 18th century can be seen on the northwest side . One of them, number 5, is known as a "bump house" because of a kink, as two originally separate houses were probably combined there. Further south there is a late classicist, yellow-washed building in which the Heinrich Schliemann Institute for Classical Studies is located. The Chancellor and the administration of the University of Rostock are located in the neo-renaissance building . The southern end is a historicizing brick building, which used to be the seat of the Rostocker Sparkasse and which now houses a furniture store.

On the northeast side there is a modern hotel building, which is connected to the Rostocker Hof shopping mall further south . Until 1942, the Rostock District Court, built in 1878/79 according to plans by Carl Luckow , was located there , a building in the style of the brick Renaissance. In the GDR era, the Rostock State Security District Administration had its headquarters in the Rostocker Hof until the end of the 1950s and also used the adjoining remand prison on Schwaanschen Strasse. From 1960 until the Peaceful Revolution , the People's Police ran the pre- trial detention center, while the Stasi used their new building not far away on Grüner Weg, where a memorial is now located. The Michaeliskloster is located behind the intersection with Altbettelmönchsstraße. Finally, on the corner of Wallstrasse is the historicizing building of the Great City School.
