Russell is Lava -filled rest of a lunar impact crater . It is located in the western part of the Oceanus Procellarum .
The south-southwest edge of Russell overlaps the larger edge of the also lava-flooded Struve crater , so that the two craters together form the shape of an eight (8). To the east of Russell is Briggs Crater and to the southeast is the lava-filled remains of Eddington .
Because of numerous smaller meteorite impacts overlying the wall, the edge of Russell is irregularly shaped. The largest of them is Briggs A. There are numerous smaller craters to the north. Because of the lava, Russell's ground is level and level with the surrounding mare . In addition, the elevation visible in many lunar craters in the center of the crater is missing .
In the past, Russell was sometimes called "Otto Struve A", or was simply considered part of the larger Struve crater. So you can not find him on some older moon maps or under the name mentioned above, whereby it should be noted that Eddington was sometimes called "Otto Struve A".
