Russell Fairfax (born March 29, 1952 ) is a former Australian rugby league player and coach and rugby union player.

Career

Rugby union

Fairfax attended Matraville Sports High School while playing rugby league for La Perouse and the Alexandria Rovers before moving to rugby union club Randwick. In the 1970s he played eight games for Australia, including a Bledisloe Cup game.

Rugby league

In 1974 Fairfax moved to the Eastern Suburbs Roosters in the NSWRL . He won the championship in his first season and would have played for Australia if he hadn't broken a leg during the 1975 season. It was this injury that prevented his participation in the 1975 NSWRL Grand Final, in which the Roosters defended their title. In 1976 he won the first World Club Challenge against St Helens with the Roosters . In his final season in 1981 he played for the Roosters' arch-rivals, the South Sydney Rabbitohs .

In the late 1980s, his attempt to return as a rugby league coach failed. He coached the Roosters in 1989 and 1990, and they were in the bottom half of the table in both seasons. He then worked as a sports journalist for Fox Sports .
