The Russet Hills (English for rust-brown hills ) are a group of hills in East Antarctica Victoria Land . In the Freyberg Mountains they extend over a length of 5.5 km in an east-west orientation and form the southern ridge of the Gallipoli Heights . To them belongs Painted Peak .
The descriptive naming was made by the New Zealand Antarctic Place-Names Committee at the suggestion of the geologist P. J. Oliver, who explored this group between 1981 and 1982 as part of the New Zealand Antarctic Research Program . The name is given by the rusty brown color from the ignimbrite rock , which the hills are mainly made of.
