monument

The Russian war cemetery Tjøtta is located on the island of Tjøtta in the Norwegian province of Nordland , directly on provincial road 17.

The cemetery was laid out in 1953 by the Norwegian Ministry of Churches as a central war cemetery for around 7,551 Soviet soldiers who perished in Norway. The background to the amalgamation as part of "Operation Asphalt" was to prevent espionage by Russian visitors. 826 graves are individual; there is also a communal grave with 6725 buried dead.

Not far to the south is the Tjøtta International War Cemetery , established in 1970.
