Tjøtta International War Cemetery

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The International War Cemetery Tjøtta is located at Reichsstraße 17 on the island of Tjøtta in the Norwegian Fylke Nordland . The cemetery was created in 1969/70.

The dead from the sinking of the prisoner transporter Rigel , which burned out and went down on November 27, 1944 off Søndre Rosøya after being hit by British carrier aircraft, lie in a communal grave. 2571 people - from the Soviet Union, Poland, Yugoslavia, Norway, Germany and (annexed) Austria - were killed. It was not possible to identify the dead. In 1970 the tomb was consecrated and a memorial stone in the form of a cross was erected. In 1977 a simple stele with an inscription was also erected.

Not far to the north is the Russian war cemetery Tjøtta with around 7,500 graves, laid out in 1953.
