Søndre Rosøya (or just Rosøya ) is an island off the Helgeland coast in the Norwegian Fylke (province) Nordland . It is located west of the island of Tjøtta on the Tjøtt fjord , is about 3 km long and about 1 km wide and uninhabited. In the north the island of Nordre Rosøya joins.
The island belongs to the municipality of Alstahaug .
history
On November 27, 1944, British carrier aircraft sank the Rigel prisoner transport off Rosøya , and 2,571 people - from the Soviet Union, Poland, Yugoslavia, Norway, Germany and (annexed) Austria - were killed. This is Norway's largest shipping disaster to date. The wreck was cleared in 1975.
