Russian Booker Prize

The Russian Booker Prize ( Russian Ру́сский Бу́кер ) is one of the most important Russian literary prizes . Since 1992 it has been awarded annually for the best Russian-language novel , regardless of the author's nationality. The award has its origins in the British Booker Prize , which has been awarded since 1969 . The then chairman of the food wholesaler Booker Group, Sir Michael Caine, took the initiative for a Russian literary prize to promote Russian literary creation, which was viewed as endangered.

The Booker Prize jury consists of five people and is re-elected every year. After compiling an extensive list of titles ("longlist"), the six best novels are sorted out and a shortlist is compiled. The six finalists will receive $ 2,000 and the winner will eventually receive the Booker Prize and $ 20,000 in prize money.

Of the 19 award-winning works, only six titles had been published in German translation by April 2016:

Vladimov's The General and His Army ( Генерал и его армия )
Asolskis The Cell ( Клетка )
Ulitskaja's Journey to Seventh Heaven ( Казус Кукоцкого )
Gallegos white on black ( Белое на чёрном ).

Another award-winning work has been available in German translation since 2012: The silent power of women by Jelena Tschischowa (original: Время женщин ). In 2016 Matisse (in the original: Матисс ) by Alexander Ilitschewski was published in German translation by Friederike Meltendorf and Valerie Engler.

In 2011, instead of the usual annual award, the special award "Russian Booker of the Decade" was awarded. The works of the winners and finalists from 2001 to 2010 were discussed and Alexander Tschudakov's novella Loschitsja mgla na staryje stupeni was chosen as the winner. The decision not to award the annual prize was mainly due to the fact that no sponsor could be found. A rule change, which will come into effect at the 2012 award ceremony, stipulates that the annual award can in future also be awarded to authors who have already died.
