The Academic Schota Rustaveli Theater ( Georgian შოთა რუსთაველის სახელობის აკადემიური თეატრი ), Rustaveli Theater for short ( Georgian რუსთაველის ტეატრი ), is a state theater in Tbilisi , Georgia .

history

The theater was founded in 1878 as an "artist community" ( Georgian საარტისტო საზოგადოება ). Since 1921 it has been named after Shota Rustaveli , a Georgian poet and writer of the Middle Ages. It later received the honorary title of Academic Theater . The directors of the theater were Kote Marjanishvili (1922–1926), Sandro Akhmeteli (1926–1935), Micheil Tumanishvili (1968–1969), Temur Tschcheidze (1969–1979) and Robert Sturua (since 1979). The building in which the Rustaveli Theater is located was built between 1898 and 1901 for the artist community based on designs by architects Szimkiewicz and Tatijschchew. It is located on Rustavelis Gamsiri Street in central Tbilisi. In the most difficult post-war year, 1919, the café in the basement of the house became the meeting point for symbolists from the Blue Horns group of artists and writers ; They gave the café the name Chimerioni ( Eng . chimera ). They have immortalized their artistic program on the walls of the café.
