In the first Scottish War of Independence , Rutherglen Castle fell into the hands of the English and was later besieged several times by troops of Robert the Bruce . Ultimately, the troops of the royal brother Edward Bruce took the castle but spared it, unlike so many other castles that had been retaken from the English.
In 1569, however, James Stewart, 1st Earl of Moray , had Rutherglen Castle burned to the ground in retaliation against the Hamiltons of Shawfield for supporting Mary Queen of Scots in the Battle of Langside .
