Ruthven (Badenoch)
Ruthven ( Scottish Gaelic : Ruadhainn ) is a small settlement in the Scottish Council Area Highland . It is located about 70 kilometers south of Inverness and about one kilometer southeast of Kingussie on the south bank of the Spey .
In Ruthven are the ruins of the Ruthven Barracks . This former barracks complex was built by the British government on the site of a medieval castle after the Jacobite Rising of 1715 to show military presence in the Highlands. In the 1745 Jacobite uprising under Bonnie Prince Charlie , the buildings were occupied by the Jacobites and set on fire after the Battle of Culloden . A reconstruction of the destroyed buildings did not take place.
