Ruurd B. Halbertsma

Ruurd B. Halbertsma , completely Ruurd Binnert Halbertsma , often simplified Ruurd Halbertsma (* 1958 ) is a Dutch classical archaeologist . He is curator at the Rijksmuseum van Oudheden in Leiden .

Life

Ruurd Halbertsma studied Classical Philology , Ancient History and Classical Archeology at the University of Leiden . He took part in excavations in Satricum in Italy and led excursions to Greece, Italy, Tunisia and Turkey. Even during his studies he was particularly interested in the history of archaeological collections in Europe and especially in the Netherlands. This led to his doctorate in Classical Archeology on the origin of the Dutch collections of the 19th century with Punic , Etruscan and Egyptian art. Halbertsma published numerous articles and monographs and gave lectures, among others at the universities of Copenhagen , Paris , New Haven ( Yale University ) and Cambridge ( Harvard University ). He oversees the Dutch part of the international research project Corpus Vasorum Antiquorum .

Halbertsma is curator of the Rijksmuseum van Oudheden and associate professor ( bijzonder hoogleraar ) of museology and history of archeology at the Faculty of Archeology at Leiden University. In 2010 he was elected a member of the Society of Antiquaries of London . From 2014 to 2015 he renewed the museum's “Classical World” permanent exhibition. The basis of this redesign was the topic of "Greeks in context", the interactions, influences and inspirations between Greek culture and the cultures of neighboring civilizations in the Mediterranean region. His main areas of activity are the material culture of Greece, Etruria and the Roman Empire, the history of building archaeological collections and museum studies.
