The Opus Spiritus Sancti secular institutes are institutes of consecrated life and are recognized as secular institutes . They are affiliated with the Catholic organization Opus Spiritus Sancti (OSS) and are divided into the Secular Institute of Women (SIW) and the Secular Institute of Diocesan Priests (SIP).

Opus Spiritus Sancti

The Catholic community Opus Spiritus Sancti is an apostolic-missionary community. It was canonically established in 1949 and is committed to the new evangelization of the world . Two of the five community groups are the secular institutes, which have their branches in Germany , Switzerland , the USA , India , the Philippines and Africa . All sub-organizations are active in the parish mission and offer faith courses, retreats , retreats and religious camps.

Secular Institute of Women

Internationally, the secular institute of women bears the name "Secular Institute of Women" with the abbreviation SIW. In Germany, the institute has the suffix “Holy Spirit Community”. This women's community was founded when some women approached the founder of Opus Spiritus Sancti, the priest Bernhard Bendel . They wanted to become members of Opus Spiritus Sancti without becoming religious . Her concern was work and life in the middle of the world. The first group of women consisted of five candidates who met regularly for spiritual events. A lifestyle soon developed based on the evangelical councils on poverty, celibacy, and obedience . They took on caring responsibilities in their local parishes and organized Bible readings , meditations and worship .

The women's secular institute is headed by a regional manager in Germany and an international manager at a higher level. The women have made a lifelong vow . You work in local groups and projects in Germany, the USA, Tanzania , India and the Philippines.

Secular institute of the diocesan priests

The secular institute for diocesan priests was founded in 1954. The nucleus of this priestly community lay in the diocese of Limburg , here too some diocesan priests turned to Bernhard Bendel for advice. They wanted to found a spiritual group without having to join a religious community and showed an interest in the Opus Spiritus Sancti community. The decisive factor was the papal letter Provida mater ecclesia , in this Apostolic Constitution the possibility of establishing secular institutes was established.

In the English-speaking world, this institute is known as the "Secular Institute of Diocesan Priests" and uses the international abbreviation SIP. The Institute of Consecrated Life is open to all diocesan priests; it is a spiritual help and meeting place. The mutual support and the common event serve the fraternal exchange and should deepen the spirituality . The priestly community is established in Germany, the USA, Tanzania, Malawi , Uganda , South Africa , India and the Philippines and is led by an international governing body. The approximately 250 members are involved in local and regional groups and parishes and meet in small discussion and support groups.
