Särskilda Skydds groups

Särskilda Skyddsgruppen (SSG) (Special Protection Group) was a special unit of the Swedish military that was founded in 1994 and merged with the Särskilda inhämtningsgruppen into the Särskilda operations groups in 2011 .

In addition to direct combat operations, the tasks also included collecting messages and protecting people and property. In addition, like the entire Swedish army, the special unit was authorized to deploy counter-terrorism domestically.

The unit had between 80 and 100 men and was stationed in Karlsborg . The exact number of men was kept secret, however.

history

In November 2005, the SSG had one fatality during its deployment in Afghanistan. During a convoy drive near Mazar-i-Sharif, an IED detonated , killing 30-year-old Lieutenant Tomas Bergqvist.

In October 2008, an article in Uppdrag Granskning caused a scandal that an SSG officer witnessed French soldiers torturing a 17-year-old boy for eight hours at the Chem Chem base near Bunia . The African boy was supposed to provide information about an incident, but could not comment on it. Two Swedish SSG soldiers wanted to intervene and make a report, but the officer prevented his soldiers' engagement. When confronted with the incident five years later, the commander of the Swedish armed forces, Håkan Syrén , admitted that he had heard about it but did nothing and promised to investigate the allegations. As a result, some officers were given temporary leave.

In 2003, the SSG participated in Operation Artemis in the Congo and in the ISAF mission in Afghanistan , in which two soldiers were killed.
