The Sõrve tuletorn is the second oldest lighthouse ( Estonian tuletorn ) in Estonia after the Kõpu tuletorn . It is located on the southern tip of the Sworbe peninsula in the area of the rural community Saaremaa on the island of Saaremaa (German / Swedish Ösel ).
The first lighthouse at this point was a wooden structure, it was built in 1646. This construction was replaced as early as 1650 by a stone building designed by Heinrich Stegeling. It was privately administered until 1737, after which it was subject to state administration. In 1770 the lighthouse was rebuilt on the rectangular ground plan and raised in 1807. The next renovation took place in 1863 when the lighthouse was given a new look at a height of 35 m. The lighthouse survived the First World War, even if the wooden interior was damaged by a fire. During the Second World War, the entire structure was blown up. In 1949, an octagonal wooden temporary structure was erected until it was given its current shape in 1960 with a reinforced concrete tower.
