The Söhnlein Rheingold Sektkellerei GmbH is a German sparkling wine producer based in Wiesbaden . It has been part of the Henkell & Co. Sektkellerei since 1987 . Today the name Söhnlein is primarily associated with the Söhnlein Brillant brand .

history

In July 1864 Johann Jacob Söhnlein founded the Rheingau sparkling wine factory in Schierstein with six employees . Since a good sparkling wine must have a good base wine , a 10-year contract was signed with Prince von Metternich (Domain Schloss Johannisberg ) in 1877 . From then on, Söhnlein was allowed to use the name Johannisberg .

Out of admiration for Richard Wagner and his Ring des Nibelungen , Söhnlein had previously used the term Rheingold . On March 28, 1876, Rheingold was the first German sparkling wine brand to be entered in the German trademark register. At the World's Fair in the same year in Philadelphia received Rheingold finally the Grand Medal .

In addition, according to a decree of Kaiser Wilhelm I , Söhnlein received the privilege that imperial warships were only christened with Söhnlein sparkling wine . In this context, the so-called Champagne War broke out in 1902 when a ship was christened in New York .

In the 1890s a new winery was built in Schierstein. With this headquarters, the company was now called “Söhnlein & Co, Rheingauer Schaumweinkellerei Act. Ges. ". In 1907 the name was changed again and Rheingold was included in the company name: "Rheingold, Söhnlein & Co". In 1912, Friedrich Wilhelm succeeded him after the death of his father and became the sole owner of the company. In 1922 the company was changed again, this time to "Söhnlein Rheingold AG".

In 1933 the Söhnlein Rheingold AG took over the sparkling wine producer Schloss Reinberg GmbH .

In the 1950s and 1960s, broader strata of society opened up to the consumption of sparkling wine. Rheingold, Prince von Metternich, and Schloss Rheinberg were part of the Söhnlein program of that time. In 1958 Rudolf August Oetker took over Söhnlein Rheingold AG. In 1960 Söhnlein Rheingold AG entered the vodka business with the takeover of Wodka Gorbatschow KG .

The Söhnlein Brillant brand was added in 1964.

In 1987 Söhnlein Rheingold AG merged with long-standing competitor Henkell & Co. to form Henkell & Söhnlein Sektkellereien KG, which has been operating as Henkell & Co. Sektkellerei KG since 2009 . The company is located in the Henkell headquarters in Wiesbaden-Biebrich .

The range of the Söhnlein brand now comprises 11 variants of sparkling wine, non-alcoholic sparkling wine and flavored cocktails containing wine.
