Johann Jacob Söhnlein

Johann Jacob Söhnlein (* 1827 in Frankfurt am Main ; † 24. January 1912 in Wiesbaden-Schierstein ) founded in 1864 Wiesbaden -Schierstein the Rheingau Sparkling wine factory , which later became the world-famous champagne producer Söhnlein with the brands Söhnlein Brillant and Rheingold was.

origin

His parents were the master bender Johann Gerhard Söhnlein (1791–1838) and his wife Clara Rosina Ettersberger (1789–1832). He had several stepbrothers from his mother's first marriage with whom he founded the “Rheingau sparkling wine factory” in Schierstein.

At the age of 15 he had already completed a commercial apprenticeship at the Frankfurt wine wholesaler Foltz-Eberle, where he acquired knowledge of wine and especially sparkling wine production. In 1850, together with Heinrich Wilhelm Leopold Dennemann, he founded the tobacco and cigar shop “Söhnlein & Dennemann” with their own cigar rolling shop.

From 1864 he led the Söhnlein company to world fame.

He found his final resting place in the north cemetery in Wiesbaden .

family

He married Anna Maria Höser (1828–1911) from Wiesbaden and had several children:

  • Julius (1856–1942), engineer and inventor
  • Heinrich (1858–1942), civil engineer and businessman in Wiesbaden
  • Friedrich Wilhelm (1860–1948) Prussian Consul ∞ Emma Pabst (1871–1943), daughter of an American brewer of German origin Frederick Pabst
  • Mathilde Götz (* 1857), most recently in the mental hospital in Kiedrich

The businessman, journalist and writer Friedrich Poths-Wegner was his wife's stepbrother.
